Why are Animal Products in Everything?

As I was making French toast this morning (vegan of course), I remembered how I used to make it before I adopted a plant-based lifestyle. The way many people make French toast is mixing eggs and dairy milk, adding cinnamon. As I was mixing my almond milk and flax seeds, I wondered, why does this recipe require dairy milk and eggs? I’m making the same exact thing, just with no animal products.

As I was flipping them over, I thought about all the other things made with dairy, meat and/or eggs:

  1. cookies
  2. cakes
  3. lasagna
  4. pasta
  5. mashed potatoes
  6. cereal
  7. granola bars
  8. cupcakes
  9. bread
  10. pizza
  11. pot pies
  12. gravy
  13. soups
  14. brownies
  15. chili
  16. gumbo
  17. cheese
  18. creamy sauces
  19. milk
  20. omelettes
  21. rice dishes
  22. beans
  23. spaghetti
  24. meatloaf
  25. tacos
  26. burgers
  27. burritos
  28. enchiladas
  29. quesadillas
  30. tortillas
  31. chips
  32. candy
  33. chocolate
  34. mayo
  35. chicken salad
  36. toothpaste
  37. mouthwash
  38. buttermilk biscuits
  39. pies
  40. alfredo sauce

The list goes on, but these are just some things that I have personally made vegan. It’s funny because when I make it, I don’t even think about the non-vegan version or how it tastes. My taste buds have changed drastically. I don’t see what purpose animal products serve in any of these dishes when they can easily be made without them. So I did some research and here is what I found:

9 things that you didn’t know had animal products in them

Animal Products in Just About Everything

20 Everyday Items that Have Animal Products in them

These are just a few, but do your own research as well. Just about everything we use is not vegan. Personally, I have my own reusable bags, for laundry I use a vegan brand, Seventh Generation, I don’t wear nail polish or perfume (I love my oils), and my toothpaste is vegan. You really have to think about some of the things we use. Read labels. If you don’t know what something is, Google it. The smart phone you are reading this on has those capabilities. Probably has animal products in it too.

Wow, I thought it was just NZ where everything has animal products in it. Even our potato chips have milk powder. Its so crazy! Luckily an Australian brand has released a vegan version of my favourite – salt n vinegar 😛
